Something to Prove

I have been glued to the 2012 Olympic summer games this past weekend and am pretty sure I will continue to be through out the week. I have been really intrigued by the vast number of triumphant stories from the athletes and it is incredible to hear how many of them have overcome incredible odds to be at the Olympics. I feel like I too have had to overcome many challenges these last few years and I relate to the athletes competing and on some level feeling like they have something to prove.
One athlete who everyone has their eyes on is Michael Phelps, I remember his face gracing the cover of so many magazines after his dominant sweep of eight gold medals in Beijing at the 2008 Olympic games. I really feel for him and can only imagine how steep he is in pressure to do well again. I again relate in ways to this stress, it seems the better you do the more people expect from you and I know for me it can be too tiring and stressful to constantly try to prove that you still have what it takes to succeed.

I am just completely taken by the strength and determination of everyone competing. I love to see the families there too, supporting and cheering on their son's and daughters. One of the best moments so far while watching Micheal Phelps compete is watching his family cheer him on. This means the world to them and you can tell by their pure enthusiasm and tension as they watch. It's so awesome to see the family support and encourage, that is in the end what is going to last after all of the excitement has ended.

People are saying Phelps is not the same great swimmer he once was based on the performance shown so far but I don't buy into that talk. I don't think anyone can take away all that he has achieved. There is a time and place for everything, sometimes it all works out together to allow the perfect outcome and you might do everything right the same way the next time and the see the outcome end completely different..

In the end the only person we have something to prove to is ourselves. That is what I hope the athletes remember when the pressure is on. They all deserve to feel proud of their achievements. I haven't personally won any medal's but I'm giving myself one tonight, I deserve Gold for being super awesome!
